Obaapa Christy was born Christiana Adowa Twene formerly Christiana Love is a Ghanaian Gospel musician. Christy got her second “showbiz name”, Obaapa from her new husband Nana Frankie. She was born on December 7, at New Suame a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana to Akwesi Twene and Mary Amoah Twene. The sensational gospel musician is the second of nine children born. Her dad Akwesi Twene was also a musician and part of the K.Gyasi Band as the lead vocalist. She started singing at a tender age. “I always went to school to sing or to pray.” I remember I was always called to lead praises and worship at school and was asked to pray for anyone who was sick.” The powerful gospel Obaapa had her basic education at her home town Anomaangye in the Ashanti region. From then she dropped out of school due to personal reasons.

MUSIC CAREER

Obaapa Christy started music with “The Hallelujah Voices”, a vibrant music group in Kumasi until she was approached by Osuani Afrifa., a famous Gospel Musician. Obaapa Christy released her first album in 2002. 17 years down the lIne, she has released eleven albums. “Osuani Afrifa” recognized the favor of God on Christy and knew she could deliver, which therefore brought her to the limelight in the music industry with her hit album” Me ma mani so”

She is perhaps best described as Ghana’s queen of praise and worship. Her incredibly deep voice and uniquely hoarse tone combine to bring a dynamic sound out of this sensational musician. In recent times, she has had more hits than any other gospel artist and is well on her way to becoming an icon of the genre. 

Known as the queen of Ghana Gospel Music and the inventor of Contemporary Gospel music. Obaapa Christy has served as a role model to most Gospel musicians. Her style and ministration has been copied by lots of musicians who see her as an inspiration. She came into the Ghana music industry in 2002 with her maiden album “Me Te Ase”. Seventeen years down the lane, she has released eleven back to back inspirational albums with Wagye me as the latest. 

 

MINISTRY 

Known as ROC CALL (Rev Obaapa Christy’s Calling). Obaapa believes her ministry is a calling from God. She  stands for people who have lost hope, the weary and poor in society, using her life as a testimony. “I came from a poor family. My father was a cobbler catering for me and my 8 other siblings. Life was indeed hard for us. But today the destiny changer has changed my destiny.” My life always inspires my music and anytime I look back, I only smile and give God all the praise.”  That is why I cannot stop praising God.” Known as the queen of praises and worship, she touched a lot of people with her songs with amazing testimonies from her fans which she fondly call “my second family”.

 

 

PROJECTS

Obaapa’s desire is to build an orphanage which will be known as the ROC HOME. Until then she never ceases to be of help to the needy, especially orphans. She does a lot of donations which she prefers to keep from the public eye. “My policy is keep the cameras home when doing good”. I always love to do it privatley So I believe God also blesses me publicly .Obaapa also donates proceeds from the gate of every album lunch to an orphanage. After the lunch of Asedanwom, the proceeds were donated to Osu Children’s Home. In 2015, after the launch of “Hyebre Sesafour”,  the proceeds were donated to an orphanage in Bodwease. This year is no exception as the proceeds will be sent to an orphanage yet to be decided. “Apart from the donation this year I will organize a medical and mental health screening for the needy. Attendants will also be registered into the National Health Insurance scheme for free.  I only pray for a good health and support from my loved ones.” 

 

AWARDS

The multiple award winner has won so many laurels both locally and internationally. She has received awards such as Gospel Song of The Year, Gospel Artiste of The Year, Gospel Album of The Year and so on, at the Ghana Music awards. In the maiden National Gospel awards in 2017, she won the Gospel Song, Album and the Ultimate Gospel Artiste of The Year. It came as no surprise when in 2008, she was the first female artiste in Ghana to receive the presidential honors. 

“By God’s grace I have received a lot of awards, some of which I don’t even remember. But my greatest awards are the souls I won through my music. When I hear of people giving their lives to God through my music, I feel so fulfilled and say to my soul this is the greatest award. 

 

MANAGEMENT

Since 2011, Obaapa has been under the umbrella of Francoba Management, with Kwame Owusu Darkwah K.P known in showbiz circles as Quame Owusu Daqua as the general manager. The name Obaapa was  given her by her husband and manager, Nana Franke, seeing that she deserved such honour. It is a phrase in Twi, a widely spoken ghanaian Language, it means; “virtuous woman”. Obaapa is blessed with 4 strong boys
